DEAR EDITOR,

As a long-standing member of the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU), I welcome the news in the Irish Farmers Journal of 6 December 2025, on the UFU Executive’s recent decision to remove SONI as a corporate member.

This seems to be following significant concern from farmers, particularly those in the Armagh area, regarding SONI’s handling of engagement around the North–South interconnector.

In my opinion the UFU acted appropriately in defence of its membership, who felt that their voices had not been heard during a project that will have major implications for their livelihoods and their land. However, it is disappointing to see that, despite this clear expression of concern from the wider farming community, the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) continues to accept SONI as a sponsor.

While the YFCU is an independent organisation, it represents the next generation of farmers, many of whom come from the same families and communities that have raised legitimate objections to SONI’s approach. The contrast is particularly stark when we consider that recent senior office holders within the YFCU, who hail from County Armagh, are among those who have highlighted their dissatisfaction with SONI.

It is therefore difficult to understand how the UFU, under pressure from grassroots members, has taken firm action, yet the youth movement of our sector continues to provide SONI with a platform and positive association without challenge. At a time when farmers in Armagh and beyond are looking for solidarity and unity, the YFCU’s continued partnership with SONI sends an unhelpful message.

In my opinion, the young farmers of Co Armagh, as well as the organisation as a whole, should stand with the UFU and the affected farmers by reconsidering SONI’s involvement in YFCU activities.

Consistency matters. If SONI’s engagement with farmers is considered unacceptable by the UFU’s membership, then the same concerns should carry weight within the YFCU. The farming community functions best when its organisations move together with a shared sense of purpose and principle.
